Welcome to Lunar Industries by The Bear and The Sea

I was recently approached by the LYFSTYL blog to create a track for an upcoming compilation. The premise of the compilation was to remix/rewrite or otherwise reinterpret either a piece of classical music or a film score of some sort.

I had a couple of songs that immediately came to mind: Rachel’s Song from Blade Runner and the opening theme to the movie Moon. I ultimately settled on Moon and Welcome To Lunar Industries. I am a huge fan of Clint Mansell’s work. His material consistently does a fantastic job of creating a backdrop to whatever cinematic world (The Fountain, Pi, Black Swan, etc) he happens to be scoring.

I wanted to create my own vision of the Moon theme while still recognizing and paying homage to not only Clint Mansell’s incredible score but also the movie itself. I also knew that I didn’t want to sample a a significant amount from the original score…so I did most of it with synths, focusing on the melodic content and building around it.

When I was creating the song, I slowly started finding parallels and allegories to the movie in some of the sounds and transitions I created. I probably went a little deeper than I needed to and most wouldn’t really care about that sort of thing…but just know that the track you’re listening to has a moderately deeper connection to the film and score.

So enjoy this piece of future funk that I’m sure Sam Bell would be blasting in his lunar rover if he had the chance….and be sure to check out the full compilation. I’m being featured alongside some great musicians.
